Product Information • The popular series continues as Sonic 3D Blast puts Sonic, everyones favorite blue hedgehog with an attitude, in the three dimensional environment of Flicky Island, home of the Flickies, little birdies that contain the secret of the hidden Chaos Emeralds. Unfortunately, Sonic's arch enemy Dr. Robotnik, mad scientist and despicable miscreant, learned of the emeralds first. Using his robot creatures to capture the birds and set up intruder defenses all over the island, he plans to steal the Chaos Emeralds and use them to rule the world. As Sonic the Hedgehog, you must explore the dangerous Flicky Island, gather up all the captured Flickies, and transfer them to the dimension rings, sending them back to the Flicky dimension. The once tranquil island is now an obstacle course of spike traps, frozen paths, lava beds, shock weapons, and robots. To break open a robot containing a Flicky, you must Spin Dash or jump on the metal creature. After setting the bird free, if you run past it, it will follow you wherever you go. Be careful, though: if you get hit by an enemy, the bird flies free. CoolROM.com's game information and ROM download page for Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis). When you have transported all of the Flickies into dimensional rings, you move onto the next level. Sonic 3D Blast is not the best sonic game, but it is still a decent game. While collecting all the sonic games on the genesis, I decided to purchase this one because its game play is a little unique compared to the other sonic games. Instead of being a side-scrolling action adventure, this game is an isometric game where you rescue the flickies or birds inside of Dr.Eggman/Robotnik's robots. The good points of this game include the soundtrack that has some of the best music on the Sega Genesis. One song that was cancelled for this game was used in sonic 4 episode 1. Also the special stage theme sounds similar to the Sonic Colors main theme. Also much of the music was remixed and used to track some levels of Sonic Adventure. Another strong point of this game is the graphics, they look incredible for a 16 bit machine. The background really resemble 3D graphics would find on other games. The last but not least strength of this game is the innovation that was implemented in the game. One addition is the gold shield which enables sonic to use the blast attack, a precursor to the homing attack that automatically targets the enemy. Another innovation is in the bosses, which use platforming and speed in addition to just waiting for an opportunity to attack. Also the special stages are an innovation because they do give the feeling of running straight through the world. However the real weakness of this game is the controls, people who play the game at first may find it difficult to defeat a robot with a single jump, or be able to run with as much precision as other sonic games on the genesis are. The few times platforming is used, the controls are unfairly difficult. However, with the gold shield the jumping problem is solved for enemies. This particular version of the game, however has one interesting thing unique about it. Though this version has been released in forms for the PS3, Wii, and XBOX 360. The original cartridge has a unique way to get the level select of the game. Merely hit the cartridge, and the game will reward you with a navy blue screen, blue sphere music, and the in white lettering 'CONGRATULATIONS, You have found the secret level select screen'. Press start and you can select whatever level you desire in the game. This strange feature is the main reason I purchased the game on the genesis, no other game I can think of ever does anything like this. This is a GREAT game once you get used to the controls. Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man are the best games ever HANDS DOWN, and this is one of the best in the Sonic theme! It is 32-bit, which is new for the Sega Genesis. You would think that the designers would totaly lose the Sonic story within the 3D, but the classic story is stil here! Here is a basic review of how the game goes. STORY: Robotnik has discovered the power of the Flickys, and roboticizes them! Sonic has to rescue the Flickys by destroying the Badniks (roboticized Flickys in this game)to free the Flickys from within the Badniks they are powering. After freeing them, Sonic teleports them by sending them through giant rings. GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is just like the original Sonic games, but it is in 3D. And instead of trying to find the sign and run past it, you have to destr oy all the Badniks and collect the Flickys inside to teleport them through the giant rings. There are 1-3 sections in each act, and 3 acts per stage, one of which is the boss level and has no Flickys. Each section of the level takes 5 Flickys teleported through the gaint ring to get to the next section. In all levels except 'Gene Gadget' act 1 you destroy Badniks to get Flickys.
